The official language of Kerala is Malayalam. Malayalam is of Dravidian origin and is widely spoken in Kerala. The Malayalam language has close resemblance to the Tamil language. Indeed, it wouldn't be wrong to say that the early development of Malayalam was greatly influenced by Tamil. Also, numerous lexical items and idiomatic expressions in modern Malayalam are of English origin. Thus it its easy to see that the Malayalam language of Kerala has constantly evolved.

Possessing an independent written script, Malayalam also has a rich modern literature. There are at least five main regional dialects of Malayalam and a number of communal dialects too.
